1 Welcome

1.1 Before You Begin

Welcome to the CDL Tools for Excel product from the Ctrl Designer LLC (CDL) company. Whether you are brand new to CDL products or are an experienced user getting your first taste of Operational Trend for Excel, we want your experience to be a good one. Please do the following:

  • Follow the directions in the Installation Procedure to install your new software; and Once your software is installed, turn to the Quick Tour chapter to learn more about the software.

  • At any time you can review the HTML or the Video of this product.

1.2 Microsoft Excel Version

The CDL Tools for Excel version 100a is developed for Microsoft Excel 2016 or newer versions only for Windows.

2 Introduction

CTRL Designer LLC (CDL) is a leading provider of state-based control (SBC ) (procedural control) based on ISA106 solutions to the process industries.

Its software portfolio and work processes help process control engineers develop an overall process control design and convert it automatically to the selected control system code. These solutions allow users to make smarter decisions to improve safety, reliability, efficiency, and sustainability.

The products are divided into phases:

2.1 Phase 1 - Assess the Plant Operation

Purpose: Before implementing the SBC, establish the plant baseline to identify the control loop performance for all controllers and tune and optimize them.

2.2 Phase 2 - Level of Automation

Purpose: Before implementing the SBC, Use the CDL work process, identify Plants (PM), Units (UM), and Equipment (EM), and review the level of automation to implement SBC. This is provided as a service.

2.4 Phase 7 - Automatic Code Maker (ACM)

Purpose: To Convert DDS code to DCS Code

Purpose: The tool provides conversion of an SOP to code for the following DCS:

3 Purchase a Single User Software

Please review the following steps

  1. Decide the CDL software to buy (like CDL-Tools-for Excel)

  2. Open the CDL store at CDL SBC Store

  3. Click on 02-CDL-Tools-for-Excel icon

  4. From pull-down menu select Software + 1 Year Support and Subscription, This will provide you with:

    • Online support

      • Report the issue with the software, and we will fix it

      • Send you new updated software

    • One-to-one Zoom Meeting to help with

      • Installation

      • Overall work process

      • Then

      • Click on Checkout

  5. Purchase the product

    • Make sure you enter your user information and company information for tax.

  6. It will send you an email like below. Pay attention to your order ID.

  7. Click View your order button

  8. You have the ZIP file of the product.

4 Purchase a Multiple-Users Software

It is very similar to above, however in the above Step 5. Checkout

  1. select the product
  2. change number (say to 5)

  1. Click Checkout button

  2. Make sure you select support & subscription

5 How to Install the CDL Tools for Excel

The CDL tools for Excel for one user package can be installed by doing the following steps:

5.1 Create a folder

Please create a folder to install the package. It is recommended to install this folder in a top directory so the path and file name do not exceed the Windows path and file name length.

The CDL Project folder name should be constructed from:

  • CDL-PmName-Project-YYYY
    • CDL is CTRL Designer LLC and is optional
    • PmName is the plant name such as VRT
    • Project is Optional
    • YYYY is the start year It is optional
  • An example is CDL-VRT-2023 In this example the folder “E:” is selected, the project name is like
    • CDL-VRT-Project-2024
    • VRT-Project-2024
    • VRT-2024

Do the following steps:

  1. Create project Folder

  2. Save the CDL-Tools-for-Excel.zip from your email to this folder

  3. Unzip the zip file

The newly unzipped folder contains the following sub-folders

  • Project
  • Tools

5.2 Project Folder

The Project folder contains:

  • P1-IPA-Industrial-Plant-Assessment
  • P2-LofA-Level-Of-Automation
  • P3-OT-Operational-Trends
  • P4-SOP-Standard-Operating-Procedure
  • P5-URS-User-Requirement-Specification
  • P6-FRS-Functional-Requirement-Specification
  • P7-ACM-Automatic-Code-Maker

Each of the folder represent a PHASE of the project. The CDL Tools for Excel package contains P3,p5 and P6 folders.

5.3 Tools Folder

The CDL Tools folder contains:

  • A-Documentation
  • B-Templates
  • C-CM-CCM-Libraries
  • D-Engines
  • E-Issues

The following folders and tools are used in this document

5.4 Request License File

The CDL tools for the Excel package contain a fully functional DEMO license valid for 30 days.

Please do the following to obtain your product license.

  1. Select CDL-VRT-Project-2024 >> Tools >> D-Engine folder
  2. Open CDL-P0-Check-Excel file

  1. Click [1] Check macro button

  1. If you get the above message, your Excel can run all CDL Excel programs.
  2. In case of Error please select {ReadMe} worksheet and follow its instructions.
  3. Quit this program and start from step 1.
  4. Select {Register} worksheet
  5. Click the [3] Read License File Button

  1. You should have demo license for this product
  2. Select {ToDo} worksheet
  3. Enter your purchase ID (from Email) in cells C15 Row 15 Column 3
  4. Copy cell C16
  5. open you email program and paste it in the message window

  1. Send the email to Sales@CtrlDesigner.Com

5.5 Install the NEW License File

Please do the following to install the new subscription license.

  1. Select CDL-VRT-Project-2024 >> Tools >> D-Engine >> Registration folder
  2. Rename
  • C-Demo-Key-CDL-TOOLS-PC-yahya-5795-2024-01-10.TXT file to
  • Z-C-Demo-Key-CDL-TOOLS-PC-yahya-5795-2024-01-10.TXT

  1. Copy the new subscription license. to this folder

  2. Select CDL-VRT-Project-2024 >> Tools >> D-Engine folder

  3. Open CDL-P0-Check-Excel file

  4. Select {Register} worksheet

  5. Click the [3] Read License File Button

Review data in column F. In case of problem please contact us.

6 Install Engine Shortcuts

The CDL-Tools (Excel VBA with extension .XLSM) are stored in the Tools folder. To prevent the user to switch between Project and Tools folder, please use the following steps to create shortcuts for your project folders.

  1. Select CDL-VRT-Project-2024 >> Tools >> D-Engine folder

  2. Open CDL-P1-Engine-Paths-Builder-v01a file

  3. Click [1] Select Folder button

  4. Click the Yes button

  5. Select your project top folder

  6. Click [2] List Files button

    • Make sure cells R5C3 contains CNTL-Designer-LLC-Copyright.docx

    • and cells R6C3 contains True

  7. Review the list of files in Row 31

  8. Click [3] Delete Shortcuts button

    1. Click [4] Select Engine Folder button

  9. Click [5] Build Shortcuts button

  10. Open the P6-FRS.. folder, and check if the shortcut exists

You are ready to start your project.
